About Alison Gillespie

Alison Gillespie

Writer

Alison Gillespie is a freelance writer who has written for numerous publications nationwide, including Smithsonian, Modern Farmer, and the Chesapeake Bay Journal. You can find her clip file here.

Alison specializes in environmental topics, but is happy to cover other topics, too.  She is available for copy writing and has written for a select number of trade magazines, small businesses and non-profit organizations.

Her book, Hives in the City (Croydon Hill, March 2014), tells the story of urban beekeepers struggling to keep their bees alive in the cities of the Mid-Atlantic. The book was awarded a Silver IPPY award for excellence in writing about the environment, ecology and nature.

Her blog, Where You Are Planted, features practical advice for those who want to create more space for wildlife in urban areas.

She lives in Silver Spring, MD, a neighborhood very close to Washington, DC.  When not at her computer writing, she likes to hike and explore the streams of Maryland. She is also a passionate gardener who likes to watch the bees land on flower tops in the summer and the birds find berries in the winter. Her ultimate gardening dream is to attract frogs and toads to her urban pond.

Alison is eager to take on new freelance assignments, and is also available to give talks about her book.
